地鐵車掌

自從搬到Brooklyn之後就沒有每天在地鐵裡出沒了。走路上班只要半個多小時，搭公車再走路也差不多時間。只有進城打工或跟姊妹滔吃飯需要坐地鐵。現在坐地鐵開始不習慣車廂臭臭的，辨識游民的眼力也開始衰退。

坐公車的確悠閒很多。Park Slope沿路有許多學校，所以早晨都是家長帶著小孩上學。因為離Prospect Park很近，溜狗的人超多，光是看狗狗就很忙。

但是，地鐵是大都會快速生活節奏的表徵。紐約的地鐵二十四小時不打烊，提供便捷、價格低廉的服務。以下這一篇地鐵車掌是2001年七月刊出，現在看讀起來還是會笑。那份觀察力還在，但是沒時間沉澱寫出好東西。真該把電腦搬到前面沒有電視的房間...

紐約的地鐵，是一個駕駛員在第一節車箱開車，還一個Conductor在列車中段負責開關門, 提示站名和轉車方法。有些Conductor還兼講笑話。

在眼神不交會，彼此不關心的車箱裡，Conductor的聲音是唯一的要緊事。沒聽到列車脫班，你就會落得跟觀光客一樣不知被載到那裡去。為了不東張西望，看起來像迷了路結果被搶；為了避免慌慌張張，失了紐約客的姿態；大家可都是豎起耳朵，專心聆聽，敏捷行動。

一般型announcement:
West 4th Street, transfer available for the A, C across the platform, and B, D, F, Q trains on the lower level. Next stop 14th Street. Stand clear of the closing doors. 西四街，轉乘A, C車在同一個月台，轉乘B, D, F, Q車在樓下。 下一站十四街，關門時請不要站在門邊。

Next stop 42nd Street, Grand Central Station. Transfer available for the 4, 5 express train, and number 7 trains to Flushing and Times Square. Nearby site seeing, you have the choice of Empire State Building on 34th Street b/t 5th and 6th Avenues, Chrysler Building on 43th street, United Nations on 46th Street by the East River.
